Drink More Water!

Water is foundational for life. We can’t live without it. Literally!

Indeed, the more of it we drink, the healthier we get. Why then do so many of us find ourselves drinking significantly less water than we should? Studies show that men should be drinking around 3 liters (13 cups) of fluids each day and women need about 2.2 liters (9 cups). If you’re not drinking nearly that much, read on for “Why and “How” to drink more water.

Why should you drink more water? 

  • Drinking water can help balance your bodily fluids and keep you healthy. You are made of a considerable amount of water, around 60 to 70 percent. Maintaining proper bodily fluids helps with digestion, the transportation of nutrients, the maintenance of body temperature and more. Headaches, dizziness, and fatigue are indicators that you might not be getting enough water. Needless to say, if you drink a healthy amount of water, your body will reward you.
    Essentially, drinking water just makes you feel better. 
  • Drinking water gives you better-looking skin. Dehydration can often be a catalyst to wrinkles, but thankfully there’s an easy remedy for dehydration. Drinking water helps to keep your skin healthy and is a great tool for preventing wrinkles.
  • Drinking water can help you control calorie intake. Water is wonderful for weight loss. Drinking a few glasses of water can keep you from reaching for other, less healthy beverages. Water can also help curb your hunger, making you feel more full, so you’re less likely to reach for a quick (and not-so-healthy) snack or that second helping at dinner. You might be surprised to realize that you don’t even have room for dessert.
  • Drinking water helps your muscles. Muscles use their balance of fluids to prevent muscle fatigue. Without enough water, muscle cells won’t work properly and your muscles will suffer. Drinking water while exercising is incredibly important, as that is when your muscles need it the most; you might think you have enough water in you for a workout, but sweating can easily prove you wrong. 

How can you drink more water?

Maybe you don’t really like drinking water, but you know you need to drink more of it. How can you learn to love the taste of water? By drinking more and more of it.
Here are some tips for getting yourself to drink more water:

  • Make a habit of drinking water, especially while working. Keep a bottle of water next to your desk and remember to fill it when it’s empty. Keep a glass of water on your bedside table and reach for that whenever you get thirsty. Get in the habit of drinking a glass of water when you wake up every morning. If you keep water handy —right next to you all day long—you’ll get used to reaching for it. When you’re not thinking about it, you might be surprised by how much water you will drink.
  • Set goals for drinking water. If you are struggling with drinking enough water, then set specific objectives to meet. For example, give yourself a goal of 1.5 liters of water before you eat lunch, or a goal of how much water you need to drink every hour. And give yourself incentives to meet the goals. For example, put off your next meal until you’ve met your water goal. Or, try this —when you’ve met your objectives for a week, reward yourself. Find a reward that will actually motivate you to meet your weekly goals.
  • Make it the more convenient option. It is so easy to choose soda over water. Especially when that vending-machine water bottle costs the same amount as that Diet Dr. Pepper (my personal weakness). It’s hard to choose that water bottle! However, if you’re choosing between that $1.50 soda and the incredibly inexpensive 32oz Nalgene bottle of clean, ice-cold water sitting on your desk, the decision might prove more difficult. Get a good water bottle, one that you will actually want to keep with you all day. Personalize it—Cover it with fun stickers or use Sharpies to add quotes or messages. Keep it filled all day. Having water at arm's reach will help keep you from reaching for that soda.
  • Don't let yourself forget! It doesn’t matter how. Set an alarm on your phone that tells you to drink water. Download a health app that will remind you to hydrate and stay active. Put a “Drink more water” sticky note on your computer/mirror/TV. Keep reminding yourself, and don’t let yourself fall back into bad habits.
  • Don't let water bore you. Sometimes the vibrant colors radiating from the vending machine might encourage you to drink soda more often than is healthy for you. Make water the drink that excites you. Keep some lemon or lime slices handy, and add that to your water. Or try cucumber slices or strawberry. Make it water, but make it fun.

So, if you find yourself tired, feeling sick, or poorly motivated to take on the day, drink some water. Proper hydration makes you sleep better, think better, work better.
